Grizzlies Win Again: Thoughts on the NBA for 1/29/14

  • After beating Houston on back-to-back nights over the weekend, the Grizzlies picked up another win last night, this time defeating the Trail Blazers in Portland. It was their third win in a row and their eighth in their last nine games. Just a game and a half separates them from a playoff spot, and there’s a very good chance they end up getting one. Like I said a few days ago, no one is going to want to play them in the first round. Imagine a team like the Thunder or Spurs who work incredibly hard all year to get the number one seed and instead of a relatively easy 1st round matchup they have to deal with the Grizzlies for five or six games. They aren’t going to be happy.

  • Anthony Davis was doing things again last night, finishing with 30 points, 7 rebounds and 8 (!) blocks. He had more blocks (8) than missed shots (6). He’s been unreal the last five games, putting up averages of 22 points, 10 rebounds, 5.4 (!) blocks, as well as 2 assists and 2 steals a night. You’re going to want to catch the highlights of his performance below.

  • The Pistons gladly took a trip down to Orlando last night to play the Magic, picking up a win to end their four game losing streak. It was just their fourth win in over a month. They took a big risk bringing in Josh Smith and Brandon Jennings over the summer, and the experiment is just not working out. Whether they move someone at the deadline or not, I can’t see this team going into next season with all four of Greg Monroe, Andre Drummond, Josh Smith and Brandon Jennings. And most likely, it will be Monroe who’s shipped out.

  • In a late night battle, the Wizards went into Oracle and picked up a big win over the Warriors last night to get back to .500. The Wizards have been weird lately, losing to the Celtics and Jazz but winning at the Suns and at the Warriors. John Wall hit a big three with over a minute left that somehow turned out to be the game-winner, as no one else scored the rest of the way. Also, Wall was doing some cool passing things last night that you should watch.
