Dallas Mavericks point guard Gal Mekel will be out four to six weeks after suffering a torn meniscus, an MRI revealed. The rookie will be forced to undergo surgery.
Mekel, 25, sat out Wednesday’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers after experiencing soreness in his knee. He played through the pain in Monday’s game, dishing out a career-high 7 assists while turning the ball over just once against the Orlando Magic. Mekel is unsure of what triggered the injury.
“I don’t know what happened,” he told the Dallas Morning News. “It started getting sore in the first half. It just felt weird and it got swollen a little bit.”
In 30 games this season, Mekel has averaged 2.4 points and 2.1 assists in over 9 minutes per contest. He is the second-ever Israeli to play in the NBA, following Omri Casspi of the Houston Rockets.
