Game of the Night: Indiana Pacers vs. Portland Trail Blazers

With only five games on the NBA schedule tonight, it made the decision for picking the Game of the Night very easy. It’s the Indiana Pacers vs. Portland Trail Blazers. In fact, this match-up probably would have been the Game of the Night if there had been 13 games to choose from, that’s how good it is.

It’s almost been too easy for the Indiana Pacers in the beginning month of this season. At 16-1, they hold the league’s best record, and are currently riding a seven game winning streak. They also hold the league’s largest point differential, winning games by an average of 11.1 points. They’re winning a lot, and they’re doing it pretty easily.

Leading the way, as everyone knows by now, has been Paul George. He had 27 points yesterday in the Pacers’ win over the Clippers, and is putting up 23.8 points and 6.1 rebounds per night. Not to mention, he plays tremendous defense. Tonight he’ll be leading the Pacers into the Rose Garden Moda Center for a meeting with the Trail Blazers. It continues a brutal stretch for the Pacers, who yesterday played the Clippers, tonight play the Trail Blazers, then face the Jazz, Spurs, Thunder and Heat, in that order. Every game except the one against Miami is on the road as well.

The Trail Blazers, meanwhile, are kicking off a home stand with tonight’s game. After their 11 game win streak was snapped with a loss to the Suns over the weekend, the Blazers bounced back with a win in Los Angeles as well yesterday, knocking off the Lakers. They hope it will be the start of another long streak.

At 14-3, the Trail Blazers have far exceeded anyone’s expectations. Behind some great play from LaMarcus Aldridge, Damian Lillard, and Wes Matthews, they’ve raced out to a tie for the best record in the Western Conference. Only the San Antonio Spurs have been able to match them so far.

The Pick: Tonight should be a great meeting between two of the league’s best performers. We should see a great match-up down low between Aldridge and Roy Hibbert/David West. And Nic Batum vs. Paul George is going to be very fun to watch as well. I think Batum does enough to stifle George, and the Blazers defend their home court with a 99-93 victory.
