Last night was a big night for the Minnesota Timberwolves, as they defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 103-90, for their first win over the franchise in 22 tries. Tonight, they will go back to the Staples Center to take on the Los Angeles Clippers in the conclusion of their mini two-game road trip to Southern California.
With a healthy roster, all the projections and excitement over this bunch is finally coming together in Minnesota. At 5-2 they sit in a tie for 3rd place in the West, a game ahead of their opponents tonight.
At 4-3, the Los Angeles Clippers have looked like world beaters some nights, but follow it up with losses to lottery bound teams. They’ve beat the Golden State Warriors and twice knocked off the Houston Rockets, but have also lost to the Lakers and the Orlando Magic.
The main problem for the Clippers has been their abysmal defense. With a defensive efficiency rating of 106.2, only the Sacramento Kings are worse on the defensive side of the ball. On many nights, their offense – led by Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, and J.J. Redick – is good enough to overcome their defensive struggles. But when their shots aren’t going in, they can’t fall back on their defense to win them games.
The Pick: Kevin Love and Chris Paul have been two of the league’s best so far this season, and their first match-up of the year should be a fun one. As all Clippers games do, it promises to be a high scoring affair. In the end, the Clippers will take advantage of the Wolves being on the second night of a back-to-back and will take home the victory 105-97.
