On Wednesday night, the Dallas Mavericks traveled to Oklahoma City to take on the Thunder. Behind the efforts of the usual suspects – Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and Serge Ibaka – the Thunder took home a comfortable 107-93 victory.

It wasn’t a particularly memorable game – sure there were some awesome moments from Westbrook and Durant, but that happens on a nightly basis – rather one to be filed away, among the hundred of other not very closely contested regular season games.

But one moment, from late in the 3rd quarter, is why we’re still talking about this forgettable game. The possession started off in a normal manner. Thunder rookie Steven Adams caught the ball by the baseline and was soon trapped by the Mavericks duo of Jae Crowder and Vince Carter. In an effort to escape the pressure, Adams began pivoting and moving his arms. At one point he accidentally catches Carer with an elbow that sends the Mavericks veteran flailing.

It should have probably been called a foul, but it didn’t appear to be malicious or dirty – just accidental contact. But in response, Carter – who was upset about both the elbow and not getting the call – hit Adams in the face with an elbow of his own as the Thunder big man crashed the boards.

It earned Carter an ejection, and now, according to Yahoo Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski, it is going to cost him a game as well.
