NBA Preseason Update

The phrase “it’s only preseason” to describe the short stint prior the NBA season might hold some truth to it. There are, however, interesting statistics and storylines throughout the preseason that are certainly worth following. Let’s take a look at some of those…

Preseason PPG Leaders: Kevin Durant (OKC) 22 pts, Anthony Davis (NOP) 22 pts, Bradley Beal (WAS) 21.4 pts, DeMarcus Cousins (SAC) 21.3 pts, James Harden (HOU) 21 pts.

Preseason RPG Leaders: Derrick Favors (UTA) 10.6, Andre Drummond (DET) 10.3, Bismack Biyombo (CHA) 9.7, Anderson Varejao (CLE) 9, Taj Gibson, (CHI) 8.6.

Preseason APG Leaders: John Wall (WAS) 8, Chris Paul (LAC) 7.6, Jrue Holiday (NOP) 6.7, Will Bynum (DET) 6.3, Reggie Jackson (OKC) 6.2, Monte Ellis (DAL) 6.2, Isaiah Thomas (SAC) 6.2.

Note: To qualify, players had to have played more than one game. Statistics are accurate as of the afternoon of 10/21.

Surprises of the preseason thus far:

Omri Casspi, acquired this offseason by the Houston Rockets is playing quality basketball after a disappointing season last year with the Cleveland Cavaliers. The first Israeli to ever play in the league, Casspi is averaging 14 points in 24 minutes and grabbing down 6.8 rebounds in 24 minutes while shooting 61 percent from the field. He is certainly making it tough for head coach Kevin McHale to not give him some quality minutes throughout the season.

Through five games, Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry has struggled. He is averaging 14.2 points in 24 minutes, but is shooting a lowly 39 percent from the field and just 33 percent from beyond the arc. Of course, however, Curry is one of the league’s premier guards and this should not be anything to worry about once the season gets underway.

Interesting Notes:

Since 2009, the Chicago Bulls have a record of 22-8 during the preseason. After five games of the 2013 – ’14 preseason, they are undefeated at 5 – 0.

The Milwaukee Bucks, at 0-4, are the only winless team remaining.

Victor Oladipo is leading all rookies in scoring, averaging 13.2 points in 26 minutes through six games. The former Indiana Hoosier is also leading all NBA guards in the rebounding department as well, pulling down 6.2 per game.
