D-League Report: Cousin, McNeal, Alabi and Temple

Another week of heavy activity for the D-League this week as teams try to grab the assets they need to fill holes due to injury, or attempt to shake things up for the stretch. Here are some highlights:

Marcus Cousin Ready for Jazz, His Uniform… Not So Much

Marcus Cousin signed a ten-day deal to join the Utah Jazz on Tuesday and were excited to get him involved quickly. He joined the team in Toronto as the Jazz began a four game road trip with a number of players (Paul Milsap, Andrei Kirilenko, Ronnie Price, Francisco Elson, Kyrylo Fesenko and Mehmet Okur) injured.

Unfortunately, things happened so quickly, that the Jazz failed to make up a new uniform for Cousin in time for his first game, so he had to wear a number 0 jersey with no name on the back.

This sort of thing usually isn’t a problem for the seasoned Jazz equipment manager, but apparently things have been particularly rocky for the equipment team, along with, you know… everyone affiliated with the Utah Jazz.

Still, things could have been worse for Cousin.

Hornets sign Jerel McNeal

Following a particularly scary injury to Chris Paul, the Hornets signed guard Jerel McNeal to a ten-day contract. This brings the total number of current NBA players with D-League experience, including players currently on assignment from their NBA teams, to 86.

McNeal is a D-League All-Star this season for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers and has had an impressive season, averaging 19.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.4 steals this season.

For those familiar with the Big East, McNeal’s name is probably familiar to you. He is Marquette’s all time leader in points (1,985), steals (287) and games played (130) and he was voted as AP All-America Second Team and All-Big East first team as a Senior (2008-09).

Raptors Re-Assign Solomon Alabi to Bayhawks

Solomon Alabi will be returning to the Erie Bayhawks for his third assignment this season, after being drafted 50th overall in this year’s NBA Draft. In the D-League, Alabi has played 11 games and averaged 8.9 PPG, 6.6 RPG and 2.6 BPG. With the Raptors, he’s played 10 games and scored a total of 4 points and 9 rebounds in 40 minutes of play.

The former Florida State Seminole was named All-ACC Defensive Team in his two seasons with the team, and lead his team to the ACC Championship game as a redshirt freshman.

Garrett Temple Signs with Bobcats

Garrett Temple continues his tour of the NBA after signing with the Charlotte Bobcats on Tuesday, his third NBA team this season. He had previously played on the Spurs and Bucks. In 24 games this year in the D-League, Temple averaged 14.0 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.0 assists. In his 13 games in the NBA, Temple is averaging 3.9 PPG and 1.0 RPG in 8.5 minutes a game.

The former LSU guard played four years for the Tigers, averaging 6.7 PPG, 3.7 RPG and 3.6 APG. He came off the bench to help the Tigers advance to the Final Four in 2006 before losing to UCLA.
